Has anyone use Nitric Oxide?
I was reading about Nitric Oxide pills and the benefits they give you when you work out. Supposedly Nitric Oxide is produced in your body regularly when you work out but gets depleted very fast if you work out hard regularly. I’m very skeptical about taking any type of pill and was wondering if there was anyone out there who knew more about it.
So does that mean the whey protein drinks that I use aren’t helping me?
Nitric oxide is produced by your body from arginine (an amino acid) and is a ccardiovascular signalling molecule. Long term nitric oxide exposure is very bad for your health (toxic to your tissues). Chronic amounts of NO have been linked to all sorts of disorders and diseases such as ulcerative colitis and multiple sclerosis.
If you are looking to make yourself more muscular and be good to your muscles, make sure when you work out that you stay hydrated. Also make sure that you eat meals rich in proteins AND carbohydrates. Most protein shakes don’t do much for you because during your workout you have depleted glycogen stores (quick glucose stores)… then when you drink a protein shake, all of that protein just gets converted into glucose and does your muscles no good. Carbohydrate and protein rich meals will make sure this doesn’t happen.
As for your whey protein drinks, look at the nutrition facts on the back and see if there are a reasonable number of carbohydrates present. You’ll want it to be more than just 1-2% of your daily value (DV) of carbohydrates. Look for something like 10-12% (more than that isn’t bad… you just don’t want to get so many that now you’re just eating protein and sugar).

Up your Mass With Creatine Akg
The most popular supplement to come along in the bodybuilding world is, of course, creatine. It first became available as creatine monohydrate, which was a chalky substance, although it performed well for many bodybuilders.
The main drawback for a lot of bodybuilders was that it often resulted in intestinal distress and diarrhea because it sat in the intestines, pulling in water. With continued use, this side effect will subside for most bodybuilders. Another drawback of the creatine monohydrate form of creatine is the amount of carbohydrates needed to induce the muscles to absorb it. This is due to the fact that insulin is required to stimulate the creatine transporter in muscle cells. It requires approximately 100 g of simple carbs for every 5 g of creatine. This amount of carbohydrates taken before and sometimes after a workout often leads to stomach bloat, not to mention unnecessary sugar calories.
Better forms of creatine have hit the market over the past few years in order to address some of these issues, as well as increase absorption and its overall muscle building effects. Some of these products are creatine malate, creatine ethyl ester, creatine methyl ester, and buffered creatine.
Creatine AKG (creatine alpha-ketoglutarate) is the newest formulation available. This is produced by binding AKG and creatine molecules together. You may have seen AKG also used in many NO (nitric oxide) products.
Alpha-Ketoglutarate is a precursor of glutamine, which means that with this supplement you are getting both glutamine and creatine. The key benefit, however, is that the intestines more easily absorb AKG, which will prevent the diarrhea that most bodybuilders experience when they take creatine monohydrate.
Another huge benefit of the creatine AKG, is that AKG readily crosses into muscle tissue without creatine transporters, which means that you no longer need to take in 100 g of carbohydrates with your creatine!
Creatine and AKG is also used in the Krebs Cycle, which is an aerobic energy-producing pathway. The Krebs cycle is used to replenish levels of quick energy within the muscle cells in between workout sets. Since creatine provides quick energy for completing more reps, and AKG helps restore energy levels between sets, the combination of the two is an extremely effective way to keep your energy and strength levels high during your workout.
Furthermore, since creatine AKG is absorbed more efficiently into the muscle tissue, you don’t need to take quite as much as you would with creatine monohydrate.
I recommend using a creatine AKG product that contains 2-5 grams creatine in each serving. Take a serving before and after your workouts, and for additional benefits, add a serving at night and first thing in the morning.

Exhaled Nitric Oxide and its role in the treatment of Asthma – Part IV
In the fourth part of the ongoing series, we discuss the findings from the reputed American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine
An excerpt from American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine in a study by Marie¨lle W. Pijnenburg, E. Marije Bakker, Wim C. Hop, and Johan C. De Jongste details the Titrating Steroids on Exhaled Nitric Oxide in Children with Asthma.
Rationale
Corticosteroids are the anti-inflammatory treatment of choice in asthma. Treatment guidelines are mainly symptom-driven but symptoms are not closely related to airway inflammation. The fraction of nitric oxide in exhaled air (FeNO) is a marker of airway inflammation in asthma.
Objective
We evaluated whether titrating steroids on FeNO improved asthma management in children.
Methods
Eighty-five children with atopic asthma, using inhaled steroids, were allocated to a FeNO group (n _ 39) in which treatment decisions were made on both FeNO and symptoms or to a symptom group (n _ 46) treated on symptoms only. Children were seen every 3 months over a 1-year period.
Measurements
Symptoms were scored during 2 weeks before visits and 4 weeks before the final visit. FeNO was measured at all visits, and airway hyper responsiveness and FEV1 were measured at the start and end of the study. Primary endpoint was cumulative steroid dose.
Results
Changes in steroid dose from baseline did not differ between groups. In the FeNO group, hyper responsiveness improved more than in the symptom group (2.5 vs. 1.1 doubling dose, p _0.04). FEV1 in the FeNO group improved, and the change in FEV1 was not significantly different between groups. The FeNO group had 8 severe exacerbations versus 18 in the symptom group. The change in symptom scores did not differ between groups. FeNO increased in the symptom group; the change in FeNO from baseline differed between groups (p _ 0.02).
Conclusion
In children with asthma, 1 year of steroid titration on FeNO did not result in higher steroid doses and did improve airway hyper responsiveness and inflammation.

Bodybuilders: Do Supplements for Building Muscle Actually Work
Serious bodybuilders know the importance of gaining muscle mass and some will do anything to get the upper edge including a few who may even go the illegal and unsafe route of steroids. Most conscientious bodybuilders who wish to avoid the health dangers of steroids, not to mention the stigma attached to the unfair and illegal use of these substances can still appreciate the benefits that legal bodybuilding supplements can give them. While there are many bodybuilding supplements available, they can be broken down into four major categories including proteins or amino acids, multivitamins, creatine based supplements, and supplements engineered to accomplish specific goals. It is the goal of this article to further discuss each type of supplement and how they may benefit a bodybuilder.
Proteins are the energy source needed for growing muscle and amino acids are the building blocks of the proteins. Proteins are often used by bodybuilders and because they occur naturally in nature, they are completely safe for human consumption. In order to build muscle, bodybuilder must supply their body with the basic building blocks needed to feed new tissue growth. Protein is this necessary building block and without it muscle tissue would break down instead of grow. The protein supplements can be broken down into four categories with each having different absorption rates and uses. Whey proteins break down quickly and therefore are best taken after a workout when the body is deep into the muscle building state. Casein proteins absorb slowly and our best taken before bed. Egg-based and Soy based proteins have a medium absorption rate and can be taken at any time and while the soy based proteins are not as effective in bodybuilding, they are considered to have additional health benefits for women. Some companies that manufacture protein supplements blend all four proteins together.
Multivitamins are supplements that combine the essential vitamins and minerals that all human beings need. While anybody can benefit from multivitamins, bodybuilders need them more than the average person due to the fact that they are continuously breaking down tissue in order to build new muscle mass. While there are many companies that produce multivitamins, if you are growing muscle mass, it is best to choose a product specifically engineered with a bodybuilder in mind. A word of caution is needed here because although vitamins and minerals do occur naturally, taking more then the recommended dosage can result in dangerous and toxic effects.
Creatine based supplements work to increase muscle mass and add extra energy during a workout. While Creatine is naturally occurring in the body and considered to be safe and effective, it has developed a somewhat negative reputation in the past. More recently creatine is becoming more accepted in the body building world and scientific evidence suggest that it is useful for any bodybuilder who wishes to increase muscle mass and energy levels. This supplement comes in capsules, liquid, and powder forms and is often combined with protein supplements for enhanced effect. While many bodybuilders suggest that creatine is not absolutely necessary, a lot of serious athletes have begun using this substance in combination with other supplements for increased muscle growth.
There are a great number of bodybuilding supplements available, many of which have been engineered for specific needs. While it is beyond the scope of this article to discuss each and every one I will talk about some of the more popular. Glutamine is an amino acid found in muscle tissue and works to prevent muscle breakdown and helps increase the speed of recovery. Supplements such as natural testosterone boosters work to gain muscle and enhance mood while anabolic flavones are non hormonal flavones that increase protein absorbtion and work well when mixed with protein. Nitic oxide is also a naturally occurring supplement and works to increase blood flow while the ZMA mineral formula is said to increase anabolic levels and elevate testosterone levels. Most of the engineered supplements are quite new and have been in development for only about the past 8 years.
With all the bodybuilding supplements available it can be extremely difficult for someone to decide what works best for them and what works will ultimately depend on what your goals as a bodybuilder are, what type of a workout schedule you use, and how much muscle mass you wish to gain. There is no set in stone program that works for everyone with each individual having different needs. Hopefully this article will give you an idea of what is available and what may work for you.

Brain Hemorrhage Drug Pipeline Analysis and Market Forecasts to 2016
GlobalData estimates that the global brain hemorrhage market was valued at $373m in 2009 and forecasts it to grow at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 4% to reach $492m by 2016. This modest growth forecast is primarily attributed to a weak pipeline landscape. The existing market is weak due to lack of targeted therapies, poor awareness levels of the condition and the poor safety profiles of the existing therapies. The market is characterized by several off-label drugs and generics that treat the symptoms of the condition. Antihypertensive agents, antiepileptic agents, stool softeners, antidotes and analgesics are the most commonly employed therapies to treat the condition symptomatically.
GlobalData has found that the brain hemorrhage market has huge unmet needs, which implies that the market is not well served by the current products and that there is considerable scope for new entrants. Brain hemorrhage therapies are largely targeted at treating the symptoms of the condition. The market is dominated by generics and off-label medications which include antihypertensive agents, antiepileptic agents, stool softeners, antidotes and analgesics. In summary, the brain hemorrhage market is expected to be a relatively open market for new entrants until 2016 with huge opportunities for value capture.
For further details please click or add the below link to your browser:
GlobalData’s analysis shows that the brain hemorrhage developmental pipeline is weak with 25 molecules in various phases of clinical development, including 13 first-in-class molecules. These first-in-class molecules have a distinct advantage over the currently marketed products for brain hemorrhage in terms of providing better symptomatic management but not with respect to curing the condition. The pipeline includes chelating agents, nitric oxide releasing agents, calcium channel blockers, cGMP phosphodiesterase inhibitors, COX inhibitors, G protein-coupled receptor antagonists, PPAR-gamma agonists, ryanodine receptor relaxants and tissue plasminogen activators for the treatment of brain hemorrhage. Most of the clinical trials are being sponsored by universities and are not expected to affect the future brain hemorrhage therapeutic market significantly. Due to this, only a few branded products are expected to enter the brain hemorrhage market.
Most of the clinical studies in the brain hemorrhage market are being sponsored by universities and the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS). Only a few companies, such as F. Hoffmann-La Roche Ltd. (Roche), Actelion Ltd. and Baxter International Inc., have important pipeline drugs for brain hemorrhage. The current competitive landscape consists entirely of generics and off-label therapies, none of which have a dominant position. The current emphasis has been on treating the symptoms of the condition without providing an absolute cure. Any company that successfully targets condition modification will become a major player in the brain hemorrhage market.
GlobalData’s report, “Brain Hemorrhage – Drug Pipeline Analysis and Market Forecasts to 2016″ is an essential source of information and analysis on the global brain hemorrhage market. The report identifies the key trends shaping and driving the global brain hemorrhage market. The report also provides insight on the prevalent competitive landscape and the emerging players expected to significantly shift the market positioning of the existing market leaders. Most importantly, the report provides valuable insights on the pipeline products within the global brain hemorrhage sector.

Exhaled Nitric Oxide: A Predictor of Steroid Response Part – II
In the second part of the ongoing series, we discuss the findings from the reputed American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine
An excerpt from American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine in a study by Andrew D. Smith, Jan O. Cowan, Karen P. Brassett, Sue Filsell, Chris McLachlan, Gabrielle Monti-Sheehan, G. Peter Herbison, and D. Robin Taylor details the trial to establish the use of eNO in the measurements to guide treatment in chronic asthma.
The findings of the study are detailed below.
Rationale
The initial management of patients who present with persistent respiratory symptoms includes recognizing those with the potential to benefit from inhaled steroid therapy. To date, this has required undertaking a “trial of steroid” to identify responders. There is increasing evidence that steroid response is more likely in patients with eosinophilic airway inflammation, and this can be assessed indirectly using exhaled nitric oxide (FENO) measurements.
Objectives
The aim was to assess the predictive accuracy of FENO to identify steroid response in 52 patients presenting with undiagnosed respiratory symptoms in a single-blind, fixed-sequence, Placebo controlled trial of inhaled fluticasone for 4 weeks.
Methods
Comparisons of predictive accuracy were made between FENO and other conventional predictors: peak flows, spirometry, bronchodilator response, and airway hyperresponsiveness measured at baseline. “Steroid response” was defined as change in symptoms, peak flows, spirometry, or airway hyperresponsiveness to adenosine based on established guidelines and recommendations.
Results
Steroid response was significantly greater in the highest FENO tertile (_ 47 ppb) for each endpoint. This outcome was independent of the diagnostic label. The predictive values for FENO
were significantly greater than for almost all other baseline predictors, with an optimum cut point of 47 ppb.
Conclusions
FENO measurements greater than 47 ppb provide a means of predicting steroid response in patients with undiagnosed respiratory symptoms. Assessing airway inflammation is of more practical value than diagnostic labeling when considering the potential usefulness of inhaled anti-inflammatory therapy.
