Are you taking Supplements for Body building?
I used to be that just working out was enough. You would look better, feel fitter, and have higher levels of energy. Best of all, it would make you look more attractive to the ladies, and if you played sports, would give you the endurance you need to run ahead of the pack. But this just is not so any longer.
Nowadays, if you don’t take body building supplements, you almost might as well not be working out at all in some circles. Standards have change, and now men need body building supplements to get to the massive sizes they desire, or to obtain the gargantuan muscle strength and speed demanded by professional sports.
The popularity of body building supplements is evident when you look at the number of steroid scandals. It seems that almost every day someone is busted for using steroids to get bigger and stronger. These are not safe body building supplements, but on the contrary can do damage to the body that is not warranted by the gains they provide. They can do heart damage, cause cancer, and perhaps worst of all, cause the infamous “roid rage” which can drive users to hurt friends and loved ones in sudden fits of anger.
For a while, it was thought that there was an easy solution. Many substances were thought to be safe and legal body building supplements, and were available on the market to increase muscle mass and performance. One of the most popular body building supplements was androstenetrione, otherwise known as andro. It was thought to increase muscle mass and performance safely by boosting testosterone production. It doesn’t really do those things, however, and is now a scheduled steroid. In men it can cause shrinking of the testicles,the development of breasts, acne, and decreased sperm count. In women, it can cause masculine traits like male pattern baldness, or the development of a deep voice. Worst of all, this drug increases the risk of a stroke in those who use it.
Although body building supplements may seem like a good idea, I think there is no substitute for just good old honest exercise. There may be only so large your body is meant to get, and you should be happy with that, instead of striving to meet impossible expectations. A fit, trim, strong body is good enough for everyone, and we do not have to take dangerous body building supplements to look like the incredible hulk. After all, who wants to date the hulk?

Steroids : Pumping Up the Issue
There may be some truths in the lyrics of Rod Stewart’s hit song “Some Guys Have All The Luck”. Whether they admit it or not, guys sometimes compare themselves with other guys especially in certain settings, such as the locker room. Time in a locker room can be challenging. It is a place where you can actually separate the boys from the men, at least, in terms of their physical development. Guys are stereotyped to be tough and shouldn’t place much concern with their appearance. Vanity is a girl’s issue.
But it’s natural to observe friends and classmates, and notice the different ways they’re growing and developing. And the reality is that a lot of guys do spend plenty of time surveying themselves in front of the mirror. It doesn’t matter whether they have reed thin bodies, or buffed like Clark Kent. The truth is, some guys care just as much as girls do about their appearance. But unlike girls, most guys are less likely to talk to their friends or relatives about how their bodies are developing. A guy may suddenly develop a negative self-image when he sees that all his friends have already matured physically, are taller, and more muscular. Guys who feel that they don’t measure up with their peers as far as body image is concerned may feel pressured and may resort to using steroids to speed up the development of their physique without taking into consideration its side effects.
The human body produces natural steroids to fight stress and promote growth and development. However, there are some people, mostly athletes, who use steroid pills, gels, creams, or injections to improve their physique or their performance. Steroids, sometimes referred to as ‘roids, juice, hype, weight trainers, gym candy, arnolds, stackers, or pumpers, are the same as, or similar to, certain hormones in the body.
Anabolic steroids are artificially produced hormones similar to androgens, the male-type sex hormones in the body. The most powerful androgen is testosterone. Testosterone is mainly a mature male hormone which promotes the masculine traits that develop during puberty, such as deepening of the voice and growth of body hair. Testosterone levels has an effect in the aggressiveness of a person. This is the reason why some athletes take anabolic steroids because of their testosterone-like effects. They stimulate muscle tissue to grow and “bulk up” in response to training by mimicking the effect of naturally produced testosterone on the body. Anabolic steroids can remain in the body anywhere from a couple of days to about a year. The popularity of this substance is due to the improved endurance, strength, and muscle mass for its users. However, there is no research study to substantiate these claims.
Another group of steroids called steroidal supplements contains dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) and/or androstenedione (also known as andro). They used to be found at health food stores or gyms but are now considered controlled substance and require a prescription. However, DHEA is one of the few exceptions and can still be bought over the counter.
The effects of steroid supplements are not well known. They are considered weaker forms of androgen but when taken in large doses, they cause effects similar to other androgens like testosterone. However, it’s been known that companies manufacturing steroids supplements often use false claims with very little known long-term effects on the body. For this reason, the government passed laws controlling steroid distribution to protect the general public.
Anabolic steroids cause many different types of problems. Some of the more serious or long-lasting side effects are:
l premature balding or hair loss
l dizziness
l mood swings, including anger, aggression, and depression
l seeing or hearing things that aren’t there (hallucinations)
l extreme feelings of mistrust or fear (paranoia)
l problems sleeping
l nausea and vomiting
l trembling
l high blood pressure that can damage the heart or blood vessels over time
l aching joints
l greater chance of injuring muscles and tendons
l jaundice or yellowing of the skin; liver damage
l urinary problems
l shortening of final adult height
l increased risk of developing heart disease, stroke, and some types of cancer
Specific risks for girls associated with anabolic steroids include:
l increased facial hair growth
l development of masculine traits, such as deepening of the voice, and loss of feminine body characteristics, such as shrinking of the breasts
l enlargement of the clitoris
l menstrual cycle changes
Specific risks for guys include:
l testicular shrinkage
l pain when urinating
l breast development
l impotence
l sterility
Serious psychological side effects of steroids may result to aggressiveness or combative attitude, extreme, uncontrolled bouts of anger caused by long-term steroid use. Steroids injections can place the person at risk for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), the virus that causes AIDS, if they share needles with other users. Dirty needles pose greater risk for contracting hepatitis or bacterial endocarditis, an infection of the inner lining of the heart. So, do not envy other guys whose muscles are well-developed than yours. Not everyone’s body changes at the same time or even at the same pace. Working out in a gym is still the best way to pump up those muscles without the possible risks steroids may bring. Most guys will eventually catch up in terms of physique development. However, some guys will remain to be taller or well-built. It could be in the genes.

TECHNICAL BRIEF
From a metabolic standpoint, life extension research is fraught with conflict and confusion. There are two opposing but temporally cooperative forms of mitochondrial renewal, but the research community usually uses the single term ‘mitochondrial biogenesis’ to describe both of them. Using the term ‘neogenesis’ to describe the making of more mitochondria and the term ‘regenesis’ to describe the repair of existing mitochondria resolves this source of confusion. For instance, the mitochondrial proliferator activator (PGC-1alpha) institutes mitochondrial regenesis when down regulated by the ‘gold standard’ of life extension known as the caloric restriction pathway. Factors extrinsic to caloric restriction, such as growth hormone and thyroxine, up regulate PGC-1alpha to institute mitochondrial neogenesis. The neo/re mitochondrial biogenesis systems are best understood within the metabolic context of equilibrium shifts toward catabolism or toward anabolism. Regenesis is generally associated with increased catabolism, increased mitochondrial NADH to OX/PHOS efficiency and steady state cell quiescence via up regulation of post neogenesis respiratory chain proteins, while neogenesis is mostly associated with increased anabolism, lowered NADH to OX/PHOS mitochondrial efficiency and elevated cell replication, following the up regulation of over a thousand constituent mitochondrial proteins. This general rule is not absolute, due to independent temporal up regulation of different elements of the mitochondrial transcriptome and proteome engendered by neogenesis and regenesis. In short, the notion of full (or complete) mitochondrial biogenesis is most appropriately described as a two phase operation. The first phase consists of the making of more numerous, but inefficient, mitochondria (neogenesis). A second phase can follow which consists of repairing old mitochondria or making new eugenic mitochondria efficient (regenesis). Killing cancer cells and instituting real life extension is critically dependant upon efficient mitochondria and, therefore, the regenesis function, because this function reduces the cell replication anabolic reduction drive state supported by excess NADH and elicits the autophagy and apoptosis systems concommittant with the up regulation of the ROS scavenging and ROS reducing regenesis functions of increased mitochondrial anti-oxidant superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity in tandem with the increased efficiency of respiratory transfer of NADH to ATP associated with catabolic drive states.
A similar confusion exists around the so called caloric restriction mimetic, resveratrol. The dividing of full mitochondrial biogenesis into the two phases of neogenesis and regenesis becomes very instructive here. Under low concentration, in-vivo conditions, resulting from oral administration, resveratrol’s activity is biased toward mitochondrial neogenesis, while in high concentrations, under in-vitro conditions, its activity is biased towards mitochondrial regenesis, based upon its double phase and condition pathway impact on PGC-1alpha. Once PGC-1alpha is perceived as a temporal toggle switch, with a chronic catabolic default state toward mitochondrial regenesis, under caloric restriction conditions, the enforced default state between necessary rounds of neogenesis is revealed to be critical to both life extension and inhibition of the cancer ‘metabotype’. In the neogenesis format, inefficient mitochondrial NADH to OX/PHOS supports anabolic reduction pathways and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. The ROS can accelerate both cancer promotion and aging. These two ill effects do not occur with dietary resveratrol because low concentration resveratrol reduces the ROS load with its powerful anti-oxidant function, and its main metabolic stimulation is oriented toward catabolic rather than anabolic pathways, in a kind of caloric restriction meta-mimicry. However, in low bioavailable concentrations, its stimulation of the caloric restriction pathway is minor, if at all. It must be noted that dietary resveratrol continues to show its rejuvenative multiple tissue and organ impacts, although without actual cancer reduction, while having only a weak impact as a caloric restriction mimetic. Average life expectancy increases, but without overall life extension. This has been a real source of consternation to researchers because resveratrol is doing what it apparently cannot do at such low concentrations. The neogenesis concept resolves this conundrum when we later compare variations of mechanisms. A rapid and sure transition from neogenesis to regenesis would insure that both systems are utilized to maximum potential. Under the mitochondrial regenesis format, ROS induced mitochondrial autophagy destroys dysfunctional mitochondria and increases the NADH to OX/PHOS efficiency of existing mitochondria, which lowers ROS production and supports catabolic oxidation pathways, thereby favoring cancer incidence reduction and life extension. This is the intracellular caloric mimetic pathway induced by high concentration in-vitro resveratrol. Interestingly, cancer cells are growth factor driven to be in an anabolic and inefficient mitochondrial format. Forcing a mitochondrial efficiency format, via some form of regenesis stimulator, just might be the intracellular conflict trigger that institutes a more bioavailable in-vivo resveratrol induced cancer cell apoptosis. Later on, we will describe how a unidirectional ancient bioenergetic regulatory feedback loop, or cycle, consisting of just several regulatory control elements that interact with numerous activators and inhibitors, allows for a mechanistic description that permits us to both resolve many discrepancies and arrive at functional descriptions that provide greater insight.
With this new understanding, an extension of our logic applies to a resolving of variable results surrounding the resveratrol/caloric restriction mimetic debate, and maybe, a better way to utilize resveratrol or other caloric restriction mimetics to achieve more desired in-vivo results.
